PASSION / JOY
At this point in my life, I have arrived at the deep belief in the absolute, unequivocal, human need to connect.
This is not an abstract concept. It is a conclusion drawn from decades lived as a dance teacher, theater improvisor, solo performer, and 35 years as a clinical social worker. Innately it is what I have organized my life around, and looking back I realize that connection is the thing.
It is incredibly difficult here. It’s traumatic. We are full of rage, and fear…so much fear. The unfairness, indifference, violence, intolerable. In our country, our communities, and even within our own families, we can find ourselves cut off from one another and in search of meaning and joy.
However, while this separation from one another has injured us, connection is what heals. Telling our stories connects us to ourselves and to one another. We shout to be heard. We write, sing, paint, dance to be understood for how we are alike and for how we are different. It is by way of our expression that we know that we belong to a family, to the world, that we matter.
It is our reach toward connection and joy.
